More Americans anti-Iraq

2005-05-04 11:41

Washington - Support for the Iraq war among Americans has dropped to 41%, the lowest level since the United States-led invasion toppled the Saddam Hussein dictatorship, according to a USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll published on Wednesday.

Fifty-seven percent of the 514 people surveyed on Friday through Sunday thought the Iraq War was not worth the fight, against only 41% who said it was. In a poll taken February 7-10, after the Iraqi elections, 48% said the war had been worth waging, against 50%who thought not.

Support for the US-led war peaked at 76% right after it was launched in March 2003, the poll takers said.

In a separate poll of 492 adults, 49% said it was a mistake sending troops to Iraq in view of developments since the war began, against 48% who said it was not a mistake. In a February poll, 45% said it was a mistake and 55% said it was not.

The polls' margin of error was plus or minus five percentage points.
