Cape Town - The South African Rugby Union on Tuesday expressed its unequivocal support for the IRB's tsunami relief match to be played between the northern and southern hemisphere on March 5.
Sarpa, the players' association, joined SA Rugby in expressing their full endorsement for the charity rugby match to help raise funds for people affected by the tsunami disaster.
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) confirmed on Monday that it would host the match at Twickenham, the headquarters of English rugby.
Brian van Rooyen, president of SA Rugby, pledged his wholehearted support for the charity match. "We are extremely proud to be part of such a fundraising effort. Many thousands of lives were lost and many more people suffered terribly.
"SA Rugby will give its unequivocal support and hopes that rugby followers will turn up in great numbers to support this cause."
Sarpa CEO Piet Heymans said none of the players taking part would be remunerated. "The players feel strongly about this. By doing this they hope to contribute in a meaningful way," said Heymans.
Springbok captain John Smit said it would be an honour to be involved in such a game, should he be selected to play.
"Many people suffered terrible losses during this devastating disaster. I would feel extremely honoured if I - and my fellow players - can in some way, contribute towards a cause that will help those people affected by the disaster," said Smit.
The IRB will announce the names of players, respective coaches and management shortly.
