London - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown shook up his government on Friday, recruiting stars from the Tony Blair era into his Cabinet.
Brown's official spokesperson confirmed that former minister Peter Mandelson was returning to the Cabinet as business secretary. Mandelson is one of the prime architects of the "New Labour" approach that brought Blair to power more than a decade ago.
In other high-profile changes, John Hutton replaces Des Browne as defence secretary and Geoff Hoon becomes transport secretary,
Spokesperson Michael Ellam says the Friday changes were to strengthen the capacity of the government to deal with the current global economic challenges.
