Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki on Thursday wished Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon a speedy recovery saying "the thoughts and prayers of South Africa" were with the seriously ill politician.
"Please accept the thoughts and prayers of the South African government and people in this trying moment in your life," Mbeki said in a statement, issued from Pretoria.
"We join the international community in general and the people of Israel in particular in wishing you a speedy recovery. It is our wish and hope that you will recover to resume your responsibility in leading the government and the people of Israel," Mbeki said.
Sharon, 77, was described as being in a critical but stable condition in a Jerusalem hospital after suffering a massive brain haemorrhage on Wednesday.
