Tbilisi - Russian planes bombed areas around the Georgian city of Gori on Tuesday, the secretary of Georgia's national security council told AFP.
An AFP reporter outside Gori saw smoke rising from hills near the town.
"Russian forces are bombing residential areas in Tkviavi village," national security council secretary Alexander Lomaia said, referring to a village near Gori.
"There were almost no civilians there as they were evacuated previously," he added.
Georgian Deputy Interior Minister Ekaterine Zguladze said earlier on Tuesday that overnight had been peaceful in Georgia and Russian troops had not advanced.
