Sydney - Outspoken Australian feminist Germaine Greer labelled "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin embarrassing on Wednesday, and said she hoped her compatriot's death brought an end to exploitative wildlife programmes.

Greer accused Irwin of provoking the stingray that killed him with a tail barb to the heart on Monday, saying such behaviour was typical of the 44-year-old naturalist's documentaries.

"I really found the whole Steve Irwin phenomenon embarrassing and I'm not the only person who did, or indeed the only Australian who did," the British-based Greer told Australia's Channel Nine television via satellite on Wednesday.

Animal world took revenge on Irwin

Asked whether she felt out of touch with most Australians given the wave of mourning that has swept her homeland since his death, Greer replied: "I don't care what I'm being called, I hope I'm out of touch with what idiots are thinking."

Greer's remarks follow a column she wrote for Britain's Guardian newspaper in which she said the animal world had finally taken its revenge on Irwin.

They angered Peter Beattie, premier of Irwin's home state of Queensland, who described Greer's comments as "outrageous".

"That's just nonsense," Beattie said. "That is just garbage and it is insensitive, crazy and untrue."

'Bucket load of politically correct pap'

The opposition Labour Party's foreign affairs spokesperson Kevin Rudd said Greer should have considered Irwin's wife and two children before speaking out.

"I think Germaine Greer should just stick a sock in it," he told reporters.

"You have got a grieving mother, you have got a couple of grieving young kids and a grieving nation and what do you get from Germaine Greer? You get a bucket load of politically correct pap - it's just nonsense.

Irwin 'a conservationist'

"Steve Irwin was a nature conservationist, an animal conservationist and made a huge contribution to the preservation of wildlife worldwide.

"And what do we get from Germaine Greer? Some gratuitous, politically correct claptrap."

Greer shot to prominence in the early 1970s with her seminal feminist work The Female Eunuch. Since then she has been largely based in Britain.

Germaine Greer is not the kind of person that should have children. Showing no affection towards other humans. Taunting a family of their recently departed son; husband and father. I would like to meet her in a quite place. But i cant do that now can i.

She obviously has a inferiority complex and could not handle the attention Steve brought to people worldwide rgarding animals that no one had knowledge about. Thanks to Steve, lots of people have a better understanding of how precious our wildlife should be to us and future generations.

I was brought up being told if you can't say anything good about somebody then rather say nothing. Effidently Greer never recieved this kind of advice in early childhood. Leave Steve alone and let him rest in peace. We loved his programs and feel a great loss now that he is gone. God bless him for all the good he has done.

My son decided to become an "animal catcher" because of Steve, and he was totally heartbroken when he heard that Steve has passed away. He was the idol of many young children all over the world, because he understood all the animals so well. God bless his family in this sad time, he will surely be missed by thousands!!

Steve Irwin did more for wildlife preservation and conservation than what probably 95% of the human population worldwide ever did. Greer saying the animal world is better off without him is just plain ridiculous. What has SHE done for the enviroment? No wonder she's a feminist...no man can probably put up with her cr*p.

Dear old Greer, maybe now I understand why you featured on BBC Prime TV's "Grumpy old women". They obviously realised before me that you were a brilliant example of a grumpy, unhappy old woman with nothing good to say about anyone or anything. Think of others before you open that big mouth of yours.

I have never seen or heard of any person alive as insensetive as Greer. She speaks like someone who has been patiently waiting for Irwin's death. Irwin did more good than harm to those animals. He contributed immensely to conservation around the world; and he was still going to as he was in discussion of conseration deals in SA and other Asian countries. Shame on you Greer.

any-one, like the late Mr Steve Irwin , who dedicated his life to understanding animals and their habitat and in doing so showed a greater sensitivity to God's creatures than the rest of us , DESERVES Respect. Not the lame-brained Greers comments. Her books title "The Female Eunuch" says it all. Thank You Steve Irwin ! Owing to your profiling animals , my children prefer Animal Planet to Cartoon Channels. What a has-been! Any publicity, whether good or bad, is better than no publicity at all! She missed the boat long, long, ago. To now try and piggy-back on the grief of Steve's family is downright disgusting! Steve, we will always love you.

I thought I was a racist and would never feel anything for non-blacks ,but I was wrong, Irwin's wildlife documentaries changed the way I viewed dangerous animals like snake and crocodiles .he was a great conservationist .Greer is an insensitive fool with no motherly instincts and not fit to be female

I believe in the cause for equality as much as I do the cause to preserve our nature. I believe that if you have a cause your aim would be to win respect within it and through this gain support. Ms Greer, on your comments I certianly have lost my respect for the feminist cause and the money I would have put into equality will be going to Steve Irwin's family - L.G. Devonport

To think that someone can be so utterly cold and out of line towards another human being who has lost their life so tragically, defies comprehension and lacks the decency that defines humanity. Did she even spare a thought for Steve's grieving family and friends? This obtuse character that Greer is, tries very hard to vie for attention and should be relegated to the dungeons of hell.

Why is it these attention seekers always have to stoop to a new low just to get themselves in the news? I think Australians are embarrassed of you, Germaine, rather than an international hero and "do-gooder" like steve as you say. You are sick!

Crikey! An excellent display of the true colors of the Germaine Greer specimen - vicious female predator that only our favourite crocodile hunter could have subdued if he was still around. Good hunting Steve-O, you will be missed.

i am shocked and saddened at the heartless comments of Ms Greer. Steve Irwin hasnt even been laid to rest yet and this woman has the audacity to speak such cruel and unkind words. Steve Irwin did so much for conservation and he gave many people a newfound appreciation for wildlife that we would normally want to harm. She has no compassion for Steve's family and friends at a sad time in their lives. She should just keep her mouth closed because comments like hers do nothing for anyone or anything.

Steve has contributed immensely towards conservation. Greer does not know what it is to love and to preserve. Steve has died doing what he held so dear. God bless you Steve and your family and my God have mercy on Greer for being so insensive.

Greer has raised a point regarding Steve's past habit of infringing the personal space of wild animals.One must disregard the emotional and compassionate factors and not criticise Greer. I regret Steve pushed his luck just too far. Nick
