Americans believe in miracles

2008-06-24 10:42

Washington - Around three-quarters of Americans believe in miracles, more Americans believe in heaven than in hell, and nearly six in 10 pray every day, a report based on a survey of 35 000 US adults showed on Monday.

Of those who pray regularly, around a third - 31% - say God answers their prayers at least once a month, and one in five Americans said they receive direct answers to specific prayer requests at least once a week, the report by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life said.

Seventy-four percent of those surveyed for the report, the US Religious Landscape Survey, said they believed in heaven as a place where people who have led good lives are rewarded, while only around six in 10 believed in hell, where unrepentant evil-doers are eternally punished.

The report reflected the changing face of the US religious landscape and also the diversity of belief among Americans.

"Once upon a time, belief in heaven and hell were very closely related and in many people's views were two sides of the same coin," John Greene, a senior research fellow at Pew told a telephone news conference.

"That does not seem to be the case any more. Many more people believe in heaven than believe in hell," he said, surmising that Americans today view God as "someone who is merciful, generous and forgiving" rather than as "a judge who punishes people".

Nearly eight in 10 American adults (79%) believe that miracles occur, the survey, which was conducted between May and August last year, showed.

Belief in God

But perhaps most striking was the near unanimous belief in God: more than nine out of 10 Americans held that belief.

But they held it in ways as diverse as the varied religious landscape of the United States, the study showed.

"While this survey finds that more than nine in 10 Americans believe in the existence of God or a universal spirit, the survey also shows that there are considerable differences in the nature of this belief," Pew research fellow Greg Smith said.

"Six in ten adults believe God is a person with whom people can have a relationship but one in four, including about half of Jews and Hindus, see God as an impersonal force," he said.

Yeah, that's why America is in such good shape these days, huh?

I wonder why the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, the Abominable Snowman and the Tokolossie were not also included in the survey. There is as much (or as little) proof of their existence than there is of the existence of a god. And it is obvious from the diversity of beliefs of the 9 in 10 people who do believe in a god that only one or none of those beliefs can be right - they can't all be right. My congratulations to the 1 in 10 who got it right - there is no god.

Good. So do lots of other people. We have seen what happens to a society which rejects God and embraces humanism. Just look at England for a start!

If 80% of Americans believe in miracles and 60% pray every day then I suggest they get on their fat knees and pray very hard that they don't go straight to hell for all the misery and suffering that they continue to inflict on our world!

It is such a pity that humans with their behaviour etc. have caused many to not believe in God. I wish I had a way to convince people like Nick, but unfortunately by the time we find out who was right, it will be too late for some of us won't it? Just as Nick believes he's right, so do the believers in every faith in the world. I probably cannot prove to you that God exists, but you can't prove that He does not. There is none so blind as he doesn't want to see.

'Americans today view God as someone who is merciful, generous and forgiving rather than as a judge who punishes people.' This is because more emphasis is placed nowadays on God being a 'God of Love', instead of 'a Righteous God'. The latter is more Biblically correct but politically incorrect.

Why is this news? America has always been a God-fearing nation and worldwide there is an upsurge in religious belief. It is a trademark of post-modernism. Modernism only focussed on the physical and rational world. We have moved past that era. People now are more concerned about the spiritual and non-physical / invisible universe. They have also realized a human has a spiritual side and that lots of material stuff and a full stomach doesn't satisfy all one's needs.

I feel sorry for you Nick, I rather believe that there is a God, than find out there was one and I didn't know Him. You just need to look around and see all and know that God does exist. If you believe in fairy tales that is your problem, that is just little things to amuse children, If you read your Bible (if you have one) you would know that there is a God. - Ardnas

All humans have an inherent need to commune with God. It is only a small fraction of any population that is agnostic or atheistic.

JJ 6/24/2008 1:31:34 PM
If you believe in a God that created the whole universe, then it is easy to believe in miracles. A miracle is an act of God and we perceive it as a suspension of the laws of nature.

JJ 6/24/2008 1:41:54 PM
Obviously not all religions can be right. Only one religion can be right - the religion that proclaims that God became a man to die for our sins. No other religion can claim such a big sacrifice. It has been believed for two thousand years and nothing will change that.

Nick 6/24/2008 1:44:11 PM
Cobus, you are right when you say I can't prove that a god does not exist. But it is also impossible to prove that the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, etc. don't exist. So it seems to be fair to take believers' claim about a god's existence as seriously as claims that the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy exist. As for atheists, there is nothing that we need to prove.

Belief in God

You know why the Tooth Fairy and other tales are not true? Because nobody is willing to die for believing in that, claiming that they have seem them in real life. Compare that to the first Christian eyewitnesses who were willing to die for what they saw and believed in. Thousands were tortured and killed by those who tried to destroy their beliefs. Therein lies the difference between a tale and the Christian belief system.

Interesting article. The 20% who get direct answers to their prayers are a cruel bunch. They can communicate to god and get answers yet the haven't prayed for solutions to poverty, HIV/AIDS, wars, crime etc. God is a good as the people who make him. He/she is criminal when criminals pray for the ability to still. He/she is a warmonger when he orders Bush to invade another country. He is a kind philantropic person when in his/her name people do good.

The easiest way to be certain that God exists is to look at the exact opposite, i.e. Satan. Few doubt that the workings of Satanism is alive and well. God exists all right...
