Washington - US President George W Bush observed a moment of silence on Tuesday on the White House lawn to honour almost 3 000 people killed in the attacks on New York and Washington six years ago.
Under a grey sky, Bush, Vice-President Dick Cheney, their wives and dozens of officials bowed their heads at 08:46 (12:46 GMT), the exact moment the first of two planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York on September 11 2001.
The ceremony ended as a choir softly sang "God Bless America".
