Amman - The head of Jordan's Bar Association says scores of lawyers have been signing up to help defend an Iraqi TV journalist who threw his shoes at President George W. Bush.
Journalist Muntadhar al-Zeidi has gained folk hero status across the Arab region after he hurled both his shoes at Bush during a news conference on Sunday in Baghdad.
Bar Association chief Saleh Armouti said the volunteer Jordanian lawyers can act as a support team for Iraqi attorneys who may defend al-Zeidi. Jordanian lawyers have no legal jurisdiction in Iraqi courts.
The Jordanian Bar Association is dominated by hardline Muslims and leftists critical of the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq that toppled Saddam Hussein. Many Jordanian lawyers took part in defending Saddam.
