Mexico City - Mexican environmental protection officials found 98 crocodiles that were being kept in the backyard of a home in the Gulf state of Veracruz, authorities said.
The reptiles were found in six small swimming pools at a house in the municipality of Tenozapa in Veracruz after an anonymous caller alerted authorities, Mexico's environmental protection agency said on Monday.
The crocodiles, which ranged in length from 30cm to 1.7m, are protected by Mexican environmental laws.
Authorities said the owner of the house has five days to present documents showing the origin of the animals.
