London - Eight people have been charged with conspiracy to murder and preparing acts of terrorism in connection with an alleged plot to blow up aircraft en route to the United States, prosecutors said on Monday.
They said the eight were among 11 charged in total with offences under the Terrorism Act 2000.
Eleven are still in custody, while one woman has been released without charge.
The investigation is ongoing.
"The investigation is far from over. The scale is immense," added deputy assistant commissioner Peter Clarke, the head of the Metropolitan police's anti-terrorism branch.
