US 'promotes terrorism in Iraq'

2006-10-13 14:24

Tehran - Iran's supreme leader on Friday accused the United States of promoting terrorism and religious division in Iraq.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said: "The reality there (in Iraq) is occupiers who intervene in all Iraqi internal affairs. ... Worse and more dangerous is that, based on plenty of evidence, they (Americans) promote terrorism in Iraq in the name of Shi'ite and Sunni Islam."

Khamenei didn't elaborate or provide evidence showing that Washington had promoted terrorism in Iraq.

The US had repeatedly accused Iran of interfering in Iraq by sending money and infiltrators to support the insurgency there. Tehran had denied the charges, saying it had no interest in motivating instability in Iraq.
