Katrina: 'Thousands dead'

2005-09-02 14:15

Baton Rouge - US Senator Mary Landrieu said on Thursday that thousands of people had died in the Hurricane Katrina disaster in the southern United States.

"We understand thousands of people are dead," Landrieu, a Democratic senator for Louisiana told a news conference here.

Authorities have only confirmed more than 100 dead in Mississippi from the powerful storm that struck the Gulf Coast on Monday.

But authorities have refused to give any firm toll for all of the stricken states.
