Washington - US President George W Bush had picked White House legal counsel Harriet Miers to replace Sandra Day O'Connor as supreme court judge, an administration official said early on Monday.
The appointment of Miers, who previously was Bush's deputy chief of staff, will have to be confirmed by the senate.
Bush had been consulting with his aides and lawmakers on the issue for the past weeks.
White House spokesperson Scott McClellan said on Thursday that the president "has been considering a diverse group of potential nominees".
Earlier plans called for replacing O'Connor with federal judge John Roberts.
But he was re-nominated to be US chief justice after the death of William Rehnquist in early September.
