Berlin - Polling stations opened on Sunday in Germany where voters are
electing a new Bundestag lower house of parliament in what promises
to be one of the closest general elections in years.
Opinion polls give Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's ruling Social
Democrats (SPD) a narrow lead over the conservative Christian Union
alliance (CDU/CSU) of his rival for the chancellery, Edmund
Stoiber.
The first exit polls will be released just after the ballot
boxes close at 18:00, with official estimations based
on early counting coming about 20 minutes later. - Sapa-AFP
