London - Seven explosions rocked London on Thursday causing at least two deaths and many serious injures and possible deaths, police said.

Blasts rocked six underground stations around the capital during the morning rush hour, a spokesperson at Scotland Yard said.

She listed the stations as: Edgware Road, King's Cross, Liverpool Street, Russell Square, Aldgate East and Moorgate.

In what has been described as a coordinated terrorist attack to coincide with the Group of Eight (G8) summit), the spokeswoman said another explosion ripped through a bus near to Russell Square

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said the picture was still "very confused" following a series of explosions that ripped through underground lines and buses in the heart of the capital.

A police spokesperson said there had been reports that at least two people had been killed in the incidents.

"We have at least two fatalities, but still unconfirmed, and many serious injuries," the spokesperson.

Britain's Scotland Yard said on Thursday it has received reports of "multiple explosions" across London.

Other reports claimed that police confirmed at least three explosions on buses in central London.

"At 08:50 we were called to Aldgate station to assist the City of London Police and British Transport Police regarding an incident on the Underground system," a spokesperson said.

"There have been further reports of multiple explosions in London. It is too early to say what has caused these explosions," she said.

"There has been a confirmed explosion on a bus at Tavistock Place," said the spokesperson. "The Metropolitan Police, British Transport Police and City of London Police are working together to ensure officers are deployed to each scene.

"There have been reports of numerous casualties but it is too early to say numbers at this stage," she said. A huge emergency operation swung into action in London after a "major incident" caused the entire network to be closed down. - AFP/Sapa-DPA
