Millions eye other countries

2009-11-04 07:23

Washington - Some 700 million people worldwide, or more than all the adults of North and South America combined, think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence and want to permanently move to another country, a poll showed on Tuesday.

Residents of sub-Saharan African countries were the most likely to want to move abroad permanently, the polls conducted in 135 countries between 2007 and this year by Gallup showed.

On average, 38% of the adult population in sub-Saharan Africa, or around 165 million people, said they would up stakes and head for another country if they had the chance.

The most popular destination was the United States, where nearly a quarter of the 700 million - around 165 million people - said they would like to settle.

In joint second were Britain, Canada and France, each being named as the preferred destination of around 45 million people.

Thirty-five million said they would go to Spain, 30 million to Saudi Arabia, and 25 million each to Australia or Germany.

The least likely to want to emigrate were Asians - only one in 10 Asian adults said they would move to another country.

Nearly 260 000 people aged 15 years and older were surveyed, either by phone or face-to-face, for the poll, which has a margin of error of around five percent.

And I'm absolutely one of them. New Zealand is my country of choice, if only I could go but I can't abandon my older sister in this place.

Prof Godwolly 11/4/2009 8:23:35 AM
If there were less humans they might be happier and more content with their lot.

splash 11/4/2009 8:44:57 AM
yeah, i know the feeling of wanting to leave.
love my country but not the people. and why should I? We are the rape capital of the world. Who in their right mind would WANT to live here? Why should I be patriotic towards that?

Fanie 11/4/2009 9:10:36 AM
Africa is Lion Country, its tuff but rewarding!

Wisdom 11/4/2009 11:30:37 AM
38% of sub-Sahara hey... So not even the Africans wanna live in Africa... Shows you how corrupt our African goverments are.

Charlie 11/4/2009 12:05:33 PM
@Prof Godwolly, I think you may have a valid point there. I think the world population is breeding itself out of a future. The higher the population density , the less freedom.

Amber 11/4/2009 12:15:12 PM
My fiance really wants to relocate, but I can't bare the thought of leaving my mother and family behind. Besides, who are you going to call when your car breaks down for instance? There's nothing better than a family get-together on your birthday or Christmas. No crime statistic can justify that for me!

eddy 11/4/2009 12:27:01 PM
I love SA…but after serious consideration we have decided to emigrate back to France. I don't see any future for my children in SA and we are getting poorer with every passing year. I'm fed up with this gov. and of having to pay outrageous amounts of money for services not delivered and seeing how gov. officials fill their pockets whilst their own blood live in shacks without any jobs, education or future. In SA we have become 'conditioned' to accept everything that is wrong. We can't even plan a future here as nothing we have is really ours.

jka 11/4/2009 1:14:47 PM
Let those who wish to, leave. Let those who want to, arrive. I for one am here to stay -- in place where every single day I am overwhelmed by beauty, by inspiration, by hope, by big dreams and big plans, by vibrancy. For me, the grass is greenest right here at home :-)

Gunner 11/4/2009 2:28:07 PM
New Zealand here I come

Kietsie 11/4/2009 2:40:27 PM
If I can go tomorrow, I would be at the airport already.

@jka 11/4/2009 2:56:15 PM
"For me, the grass is greenest right here at home :-)" possibly because you're smoking it right now!!!

Nick 11/4/2009 3:35:49 PM
I love SA and I will stay and make a contribution to making SA a better place. I encourage those who want to leave to do so asap. Staying here and spitting "I hate this place" messages on websites is not only sad for you, it's boring for me and doesn't help anything. Ironically so many SA expats still choose to run SA down even while rolling around on the so-called 'greener' grass. What is up with THAT?? I think it should be an individual's choice where to live in the world. If you can make it happen, good for you! Bon Voyage. Personally, I want to be here to be a part of the solution and I believe that there are many like-minded skilled SA citizens who want to do the same. Aah, I love the smell of democracy in the morning... ;-)

Viva le Blues 11/4/2009 3:44:34 PM
My preferred choices are 1st France (The mother country... for me), and then Australia. Moving back to Europe is very appealing for me... the one place where us whites truly belong.

Dave 11/4/2009 4:08:37 PM
I have lived in Australia for 10 years and I am coming back in a week permanently. South Africa is a lovely place and nothing in the world beats it! That's not to say I won't go back to Australia in future.. but it'll only be for career purposes (i.e. earning dollars).

Mark 11/4/2009 4:40:49 PM
I lived in SA for 11 years. I returned to Canada and have been here for 1 year now, all settled in. The truth is, we miss alot about SA, but are very much enjoying our home here in Canada. Our children play safely on the streets, we don't worry about our future. We do miss the lifestyle in SA though. Don't get me wrong, we have alot of fun in Canada, but have to do our own laundry, cut grass ourselves, etc. Have we made the right decision? I believe so. Is it for everyone? I don't think so. The correct answer? It depends...

Kevin 11/4/2009 5:18:49 PM
I will leave SA tomorrow if I was certain of a job abroad, I don't have a preferred country, so the UK, Europe, Oz, New Zealand, Canada or the USA will do just fine. I am tired of the corruption and violent crime here in SA. I want to find out for myself what the grass colour is on the other side of the fence.

Gonners 11/4/2009 10:24:38 PM
I left SA just a few months ago for NZ. Had enough paying through my nose just to get shafted in terms of services. Here in NZ the weather may not be as pleasant but hey at least a jacket can protect me from these elements, not a bulletproof-jacket that's needed for protection from SA's elements.

Everything here works, people are friendly and common sense prevails. It's not perfect, there are politicians caught dipping into public funds but the difference is they're fired not promoted.

As far as I'm concerned the grass is lumo green here and one should abandon the African continent asap. It's not easy to leave, staying requires one do absolutely nothing different.

To those who'd brand me a coward for "running away", I'd counter going takes courage, staying probably takes more courage, well that or stuipidity.

My wife and I have been in Auckland since August last year. We absolutely love this country and would never consider returning to SA. I was one of those who said I would never leave SA but my eyes were opened when I finally experienced what it is to live without fear when I came here on a look-see. Yes, we miss family terribly but it is a sacrifice we are prepared to make for our future and that of our children in years to come. If I think back, yes the crime, AA, BEE etc are factors that influenced my decision but one of the issues that made me miserable in SA was seeing how certain people were getting away with everything. When someone is caught doing something wrong, they get off on some technicality. There is just no accountability in SA, particualrly for policticians. I feel more at home here in NZ and I can only say to those that are considering it, do it! You often hear of all the SA in Aus but I never knew just how many SA there were here until I lived here. You meet them constantly in work environments or hear them in shopping centres etc.

Johannes 11/5/2009 12:32:24 AM
For Bussiness reasons, I have been stationed in South America for the past 5 years, it is nothing better than SA. My house have been robbed 12 times and my van stollen once - so wake up South Africans it is happening everywhere. I have been at the NZ farmers Union meeting recently where the President complained about theft on farms, so welcome home emigrants!

Ande 11/5/2009 4:35:27 AM
I should of left 30years and not 10 years ago like I did

Canadian 11/5/2009 4:38:08 AM
Left SA for Canada 10 years ago best move I ever made

Tata 11/5/2009 11:19:42 AM
Hard to leave the family behind, but delighted I had the courage to do so - it would have been easy to stay - big house, a couple of German cars, gardner, servant and nanny!. Been in Auckland for 10 years. Still visit SA often and wish them the best - hell I hope its OK. My future is secure now, just took a bit of a sacrifice. I guess those strongly loyal and wanting to make a difference must be "bigger" than me. Well done mates - just check you desire to "stay and do the right thing" is not clouded by your comfortable lifestyle. Beacuse the one thing that is going to hapen in life is change. And I dont know what the change will bring for you in South Africa, but I have a pretty good idea - so I will watch from afar! Good Luck

Alex 11/5/2009 11:48:10 AM
@Ande,,,ditto on that.
Left for Germany 3 years ago and should've left many years sooner. Oh well, still better late than never.

Kevin in Brisbane 11/5/2009 12:16:13 PM
Brisbane is known as "The Far East Rand" or "Durban East" depending on where you come from. There are so many Saffas here in S.E.Queensland it's starting to get embarrassing. Genuine ..... you can't even have a good skinder in Afrikaans without getting bust by some boertjie. No burglar bars, no alarms, no armed response security, no hefty insurance policies ....... No Worries Mate! I despised anyone who considered leaving. Now for the life of me, I cannot imagine why anyone wouldn't.
