Kathmandu - Sixteen policemen and three army personnel were killed in overnight clashes with Maoist rebels in western Nepal, a senior army official said on Wednesday.
"Nineteen people were killed in the clashes in Palpa district," said the army official on condition of anonymity.
The clash came as the army and police prepared for nationwide protests on the first anniversary of King Gyanendra's February 1 takeover, when he seized absolute power and promised to deal with the 10-year-old Maoist insurgency.
