Leaders reach out to Obama

2008-11-08 22:47

Beijing - China and the United States should "accommodate each other's concerns," Chinese President Hu Jintao told US president-elect Barack Obama Saturday in a telephone conversation, state media reported.

Jintao was one of several leaders who reached out to Obama at the weekend, signalling a willingness from different regions of the world to work with America in the future.

Hu and Obama spoke on a range of issues including the current global financial turmoil and on strengthening ties in the future, Xinhua news agency reported early Sunday.

In addition, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Obama agreed to meet in person in the near future during a telephone conversation on Saturday as well.

A Kremlin spokesperson said the meeting was most likely to take place when they were both in Washington for the Group of 20 summit next weekend.

The spokesperson declined to give details of the telephone call between the two leaders, saying only that Medvedev congratulated Obama on his successful campaign for the presidency.

Earlier on Saturday, Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal said his group is ready to open talks with US President-elect Barack Obama, who must deal with the Palestinian militant group if he wants to address the wider conflict in the Middle East.

Khaled Mashaal said that Hamas is ready for dialogue with Obama and his new administration "on the basis that the American administration respects our rights and our options." - News24
