18 die in Brazilian accident

Rio de Janeiro - A small bus carrying people back to their village from the northeastern provincial capital of Recife plunged into a river on Thursday, killing 17 people on the bus and a firefighter involved in the rescue effort, authorities said.
The accident occurred in heavy rain in a suburb of Recife, capital of the northern Brazilian province of Pernambuco. The indigenous people had travelled to Recife for medical treatment, according to news reports quoting authorities.
One passenger on the bus survived after being pulled from the river by truck drivers and firefighters who mounted a massive rescue effort, reports said. Four small children were among the dead. - Sapa-dpa
