Washington - A strong earthquake measuring a magnitude of six shook Panama early on Saturday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, the US Geological Survey reported.
The epicentre of the tremor, which occurred at 01:49 (06:49 GMT), was located 97km northeast of the capital Panama City.
The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
