Jerusalem - Israeli police said on Sunday they would step up their presence in city centres and public places across the country to secure civilians as they begin celebrating the Jewish New Year.
Starting early on Monday, thousands of police, border police and civil volunteers will be deployed across city centres, in markets and around synagogues to secure the crowds celebrating the holiday, which begins at sundown.
Police roadblocks will also be set up at the main entrances to towns and cities and security increased at bus stops and particularly around Jerusalem.
"This year, police will be deployed with maximum preparedness in city centres, in places of entertainment and along the seam line (which skirts the West Bank) with an emphasis on securing special events in Jerusalem," police chief Moshe Karadi told army radio.
