12 German police hurt in riots

Leipzig, Germany - In Germany's worst case of New Year's Eve violence, 12 police officers were hurt as they brought hundreds of rioting youths under control in the eastern city of Leipzig, a police spokesperson said Thursday morning.
The crowd threw bottles, stones and firecrackers at police. A policewoman was treated in hospital with a bad cut to the head. Police said they took 16 persons into custody and released a further 146 persons after noting their identities and warning them. - Sapa-dpa
