London - The city's entire underground railway network has been suspended on Thursday after a blast and another "incident" shook the system, leaving several people wounded, officials and rescue workers said.
The chaos came a day after the British capital was chosen to host the 2012 Olympics.
Police evacuated a number of mainline railway and underground stations following a blast near Liverpool Street Station, which serves London's financial district, and a separate incident in the west of the capital.
The second incident apparently took place at Edgware Road station in northwest London.
It followed reports of an explosion on the line near Liverpool St Station, a key London railway terminal that serves the financial district.
A London ambulance spokesperson said a number of vehicles had been sent to the scene.
Explosions have also been heard at Aldgate, King's Cross, Old Street and Russell Square.
Metronet, a company which maintains the subway infrastructure, said the explosion was caused by a power surge.
"There are walking wounded, but that is as much as we know at the moment," said a police spokesperson, speaking on condition of anonymity. - AP/AFP
