Madrid - The men believed to have carried out last month's deadly bombings in Madrid were also planning to attack a building used by the Jewish community.
This was revealed in the daily El Mundo newspaper on Tuesday. The paper quoted sources close to the investigation.
El Mundo said that documents found in a flat where presumed instigators of the attacks blew themselves up, rather than face arrest, indicated that the group was planning to attack a Jewish meeting place in Hoyo de Manzanares, 37km northwest of Madrid.
Seven of the presumed instigators of the Madrid attacks committed suicide by blowing up their flat situated in the suburbs of Madrid on April 3. Investigators have since been studying documents found in the flat.
Premises
El Mundo said that police had surrounded the premises in Hoyo de Manzanares last Thursday and carried out a thorough search. The building, used regularly for meetings by members of the Spanish Jewish community, was located next to a Jewish cemetery, it said.
Quoting "totally reliable police and judicial sources", El Mundo said documents found in the blown-up flat indicated that its occupants had been studying the movements of people visiting the Jewish centre.
The bombings that hit several rush-hour trains headed for Madrid on March 11 killed 191 people and left 1 900 injured.
The blast which killed the seven suspected terrorists on April 3 took place in the Madrid suburb of Leganes. It also killed a police officer.
