Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

Oslo - United States President Barack Obama on Friday won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said.

"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play."

Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, Colombian senator Piedad Cordoba and Chinese dissident Hu Jia were among the favourites to win the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, Norwegian national broadcaster NRK reported on Friday.

A record 205 nominations were received this year.

I'm horrified. How long has he been US prez - five months max? How long has Tsvangirai taken it on the chin (and on the head and nose) in trying to improve things in Zim. Obama is cool, but he has troops in Iraq, Afghan and a bunch of untried people incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay. My dog is more of a vegetarian than Obama is a peacenik. The question is who is really pulling the strings of the Nobel committee...

Peace? where in USA?

Moses Gama 10/9/2009 11:49:56 AM
Well done President Obama you deserve it I wish the world can have more leaders like you,who will put the interest of the world at heart.

zane 10/9/2009 11:53:30 AM
I like Barak but he doesnt deserve the prize... he has made the right noises but has not achieved much, nor have people benefited from him yet... the prize is premature... maybe in 2-3 years yes but at the moment there are far more deserving people who have achieved wonders for people not as fortunate

Miriam 10/9/2009 11:56:26 AM
Obama has not done much in this field yet. I truly believe Morgan Tsvangirai deserved this prize he sacrificed so much and is doing things to improve his country's situation not just talking the talk as Obama does so well. What a sad situation not sure the nobel peace prize holds any intigrity anymore.

Nine 10/9/2009 11:56:28 AM
President is involve in two fronts, iraq/afghanistan,
and getting a peace award.
Joke of the century.

FJ 10/9/2009 11:59:03 AM
Did I miss something? What has he done?

Dennis Cape Town 10/9/2009 11:59:54 AM
I think that the award was done more in hope than for results At the moment Obama has expressed his thoughts and hopes , but when push comes to shove can he deliver , can he walk the good talk So far on the Middle East he has backed down and nor delivered on his promises Maybe it is all a case of hype and spin

Adrian 10/9/2009 12:01:36 PM
I reckon he's earned it. Well done prez.

strehler@metroweb.co.za 10/9/2009 12:03:20 PM
Not sure if he has really proven himself.

NP 10/9/2009 12:03:31 PM
I hear what they are saying, but it has all been talk thus far...he has not really done anything. Don't get me wrong, he is a way better than those who came before him (ie. Mr Bush)and what he says gives us hope, but what has he actually done?

Mike Lowrie 10/9/2009 12:10:07 PM
That is such a crock! What has Obama done? Won the US presidency.... wow.... ur awesome, lets not forget, even the W did that! What about people like Morgan Tsvangirai who has actively suffered to achieve peace in Zimbabwe, its a disgrace, nay an outrage!

mike 10/9/2009 12:28:17 PM
how can a man who has the power to end the occupation of afghanistan by his own army receive the nobel prize- this is ridiculous and has devalued this award forever.

haha 10/9/2009 12:49:35 PM
Wow thats crazy, he makes a bit of noise does nothing and wins the nobel peace prize...

You are comparing the person who added a basketball court to the white house to Tsvangirai who lost how many family members?

Has the world gone crazy?

C Jansen 10/9/2009 12:51:27 PM
No, the Nobel Peace prize is too early. I for one have not seen any fruits, The world has many heroes who had and still are sacrificing there lives for peace and justice. Morgan Tsvangirai for one, he deserves it more.
Yes one wonders , who, really is pulling the strings?????

I wish Africa in the representation of Mr.Morgan Tsvangarai could be honoured for the extra ordinary efforts they put in trying to promote democcracy on the Continent.

PM 10/9/2009 3:00:37 PM
The nobel peace price is well deserved by President Obama...The Guy is the Symbol of hope and for the better things to come for the world.

I am happy and very proud of him

RIA 10/9/2009 3:02:02 PM
Well done President Barack Obama

You derserve it!

You have my full support.

Morgan T 4 the prize 10/9/2009 3:38:49 PM
This is ludicrous - then man is a fantastic speaker yes, but he is absolutely all talk. He has achieved nothing but more death in Iraq and Afghanistan, no progress in the ME, people who have been locked up at G-Bay without trial for over 8 years, deciding to release the Abu Ghraib abuse photos and then going back on it, his country is the largest developer of weapons systems in the world and has the largest nuclear arsenal and he is awarded the peace prize?? What a sign of the times, Morgan should feel hard done by, as should many other true peace lovers around the world.

Somph 10/9/2009 5:46:36 PM
@NP and @Dennis... I agree, he's only won it because of PR noise. Which means I should win an Oscar for the movie I haven't made yet.

Nine 10/10/2009 12:36:32 AM
Biggest joke of the century.
Peace award for what,
Killing innocents in IRAQ/AFGHANISTAN.
Country in a war and president awaarded with nobel peace award.
Thats shows how independent Nobel Committee is.

Ahimsa 10/12/2009 11:36:33 AM
What a joke! Obama the man who has gone against every political promise that he made the American people before he got elected (how very “politician” of you, I see this being echoed in SA). He's more of a war monger than his predecessor; Bush. When the people of the world stop following blindly all the media hype that gets cast around this man, then we can look beyond the smoke screen and realize that he is only been accelerating the USA's foreign policy and by no means does this policy end in any peaceful resolutions when America take all their big big weapons and blow the living daylights out of small countries... Where is the Peace? This is a complete and utter con, and the people have been duped again into believing in a leader who is merely a puppet for the wealthy international banking interests who funded his campaign and who represent his key personal. Do some research, before you shout his glories and jump onto the bandwagon with the rest of the world?

Johnnii 10/12/2009 12:21:52 PM
Obama is a lucky man,but infact i agree with who are saying he doesn't deserve the prize of noble.
