Canada quits racism conference

2008-01-24 08:39

Ottowa - Canada on Wednesday bowed out of the United Nations' 2009 conference on racism in Durban, saying it would likely "degenerate into ... expressions of intolerance and anti-Semitism".

Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity Jason Kenney said that, to his knowledge, Canada was the first country to announce it would not take part in the 2009 Durban Review Conference.

The UN's first World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, held in 2001 in the same South African city, "degenerated into open and divisive expressions of intolerance and anti-Semitism" that prompted Israel and United States to abandon the meeting, said Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier.

"Secretary of State Kenney and I had hoped that the preparatory process for the 2009 Durban Review Conference would remedy the mistakes of the past. Despite our efforts, we have concluded that it will not," he added in a statement.

"Canada will therefore not participate in the Durban Review Conference in 2009," Bernier said.

Libya, Iran on organising committee

Kenney said it was clear that forces that dominated the 2001 conference were still in control, noting that Libya had been elected president of the event's organising committee, which also included Iran, a country that has advocated Israel's destruction.

He said Canada tried unsuccessfully to influence the preparatory process of the upcoming conference, and that by withdrawing its participation it hoped to signal other countries to avoid the mistakes of the 2001 meeting.

The Jewish B'nai Brith organisation welcomed Canada's decision, saying that it was setting an example by refusing to take part in an event that promotes hate and intolerance.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper's conservative administration has been a staunch defender of Israel since it rose to power two years ago.

Last week, Bernier apologised to Israel after his ministry published an internal document that included Israel and United States in a list of countries where prisoners risk torture. He ordered the mistaken entry to be edited out.

This is a big joke comming from SA since this is a country that enshrines racism through AA, BEE, racial quotas at universities etc in the name of the so called disadvantaged blacks. Since 1994 there have been no disadvantaged blacks. Whites have been disadvantaged through blatant racism advocated by the scum anc who with their idea of democracy tortured people in their Quatro camp in Angola - people that did not agree with anc scum ideas.

I note with disgust the reasons given by the Canadians as reasons for snubbing the UN's Durban Conference. It's just a matter of time, before the US, and their other hypocritic allies follows. The question is how will the world work towards a non-racial atmosphere if the West keeps on snubbing and boycotting events likely to question their loyalties and hipocracy

A most eduacated viewpoint from a highly developed country.

"...an event that promotes hate and intolerance" - an anti-racism conference?? Are you kidding me! Now I admit, Iran was just plain old dumb to call for the "destruction of Israel" but man, it's not like they're innocent! They have the largest nuclear arsenal in the middle east, they punish millions of people for the wrongdoings of a few, women and children included. Ratio of Israeli: Palestinian deaths = over 1:10! Why does the West always stick up for Israel?! FOR THE OIL - thats why!

The racism conference is a farce purely because this country still abdicates racial biase. Therefore I do not blame other countries for pulling out(even if there reasons are different), because there is always someone else to blame. Most governments in AFRICA never take responsibility for their own future and current situation. Always blame the past and ask for hand outs. While the corrupt government officials plunder their countries blaming others for their criminal behaviour.

For those that miss the point, they have withdrawn because this conference in 2001 ended up encouraging racism rather than curbing it. Just because you are black or a palestinian does not mean you are exempt from being a possible racist.

I think I want to immigrate to Canada, good for you Canada. I like the fact that you call a spade a spade! Who is to say that they will have power. I hope the conference lands up in the dark like the rest of the SA population. South Africa is a joke. The Goverment are clearly unable to run the Country and the (majority)population are still dump enough to vote them in-one huge joke after another!

"Just because you are black or a palestinian does not mean you are exempt from being a possible racist. - Doorboot" Agreed 100%, the same goes for being an Israeli, a white man, a Canadian, an American...etc. It's not lmited to any individual.
