Washington - The International Monetary Fund approved on Monday $15.6m in emergency assistance to Haiti within a programme to help countries emerging from armed conflicts.
"The assistance is intended to help Haiti's recovery from an extended period of political conflict and will support the interim government's efforts to strengthen key institutions and governance, promote economic recovery, improve access to basic services, and restore security," the IMF said in a statement.
An interim government was appointed after former president Jean Bertrand Aristide fled the Caribbean nation on February 29 amid an armed uprising against his rule. - AFP
