London - Britain's Scotland Yard said on Thursday it has received reports of "multiple explosions" across London.

Other reports claimed that police confirmed at least three explosions on buses in central London. "At 08:50 we were called to Aldgate station to assist the City of London Police and British Transport Police regarding an incident on the Underground system," a spokesperson said. "There have been further reports of multiple explosions in London. It is too early to say what has caused these explosions," she said. "There has been a confirmed explosion on a bus at Tavistock Place," said the spokesperson. "The Metropolitan Police, British Transport Police and City of London Police are working together to ensure officers are deployed to each scene. "There have been reports of numerous casualties but it is too early to say numbers at this stage," she said.

A huge emergency operation swung into action in London after a "major incident" caused the entire network to be closed down.

It was too early to speculate about a possible terrorist attack, police said.

Thousands of people had been evacuated in the morning rush hour from underground trains in a "calm manner", police said.

At Liverpool Street station, scores of walking wounded with blackened faces were wondering through the streets.

Transport police said two trains were stuck in a tunnel near Edgware Road.
