Rome - Pope Benedict XVI's personal apology for criticising Islam failed to stem anger in some parts of the Muslim world on Monday, despite calls for calm from Islamic and Western leaders.

Hundreds of angry Iraqi demonstrators burned an effigy of the pope in the southern port city of Basra, while al-Qaeda said it will wage jihad (holy war) until the "servant of the cross" (the pope), and the West, are defeated.

Iran said Benedict's apology did not go far enough and called on the 79-year-old pontiff to admit he had made a mistake.

"The pope was right to give these explanations and he said that his comments were badly reported," Tehran government spokesperson Gholam Hossein Elham said.

"These explanations were necessary but not sufficient. He needs to say more clearly that what he said was an error and correct it," he added.

Al-Qaeda threat to 'smash the cross'

An al-Qaeda statement posted on the internet on Monday threatened to "smash the cross".

"We say to the servant of the cross: wait for defeat... We say to infidels and tyrants: wait for what will afflict you," it said.

"We will smash the cross... (you will have no choice but) Islam or death," said the statement attributed to the Mujahedeen consultative council.

Two other armed groups in Iraq, Jaish al-Mujahedeen (the Mujahedeen's Army) and Asaeb al-Iraq al-Jihadiya (League of Jihadists in Iraq), have already threatened the Vatican with reprisals in statements posted on Islamist internet websites.

Apology, diplomatic offensive

In a personal apology on Sunday, the leader of the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics said he was "deeply sorry" for the offence caused by his remarks made in Germany on Tuesday in which he quoted an obscure medieval text that criticised some teachings of the Prophet Mohammed as "evil and inhuman".

The Vatican meanwhile launched a diplomatic offensive to explain to Muslim countries the pope's position on Islam.

Vatican secretary of state Tarcisio Bertone told the Corriere della Sera that Vatican ambassadors had been asked to explain to political and religious authorities in Muslim countries the full text of the pope's speech, which heretofore had been taken out of context and "heavily manipulated".

Some welcome the apology

A handful of Muslim groups have welcomed the papal apology, although most Muslim nations had yet to respond early on Monday.

Mohammed Habib, a senior member of Egypt's opposition Muslim Brotherhood, told AFP they considered the apology a retraction of the pope's statement.

In India, the powerful All India Muslim Personal Law Board based in the northern city of Lucknow called for an end to protests against the Vatican.

'Day of anger' against remarks

But in some quarters, Muslim anger appeared likely to simmer through the week after calls by an Egyptian-born Islamic scholar for followers of the faith to hold a "day of anger" on Friday against the pope's remarks.

Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a Sunni Muslim, said on Al-Jazeera television that he considered the pope had "not apologised" on Sunday.

Speaking in the name of the "world union of scholars of Islam" al-Qaradawi called on Muslims to hold a day of "peaceful anger" on Friday, the last day of collective prayer before the start of Ramadan.

He said this should involve "demonstrations, or sit-ins in the large mosques in the hour following the prayers."

They object to Islam being linked to violence yet by their fruit they are known!

muhammed mayet 9/18/2006 2:28:47 PM
all i can say is that the media needs to cut religion out of the politics sector, reason being ISLAM is a peaceful religion.if its not the muslims agianst the jews than they against the chritstians, which is totally wrong and unacceptable.the media claims that the whole world is fighting agianst terrorisim but in actual fact the War is against the BEUATIFUL, PEACEFUL RELIGION ISLAM.ISLAM TEACHES ALL ITS BELIVERS TO TREAT ONE AND ALL WITH UTMOST RESPCET NO MATTER RACE,RELIGION OR COLOUR

FRITZ GROBLER 9/18/2006 2:30:14 PM
Why do muslims act in such anger over statements made by one person. Now they are angry and making statements like smash the cross. They are basically doing the same thing as the pope did. Make a comment from their own point of reference wich is Islam. Now why is that fine, but the pope cant say what he thinks? And saying either Islam or death! So they think no one is right except themselves. What if Christians now stand up and burn effigies of islam leaders? It is utterly ridicules.

Alan 9/18/2006 2:34:58 PM
Judging by the response of Islam to the truthful statement by the Pope, it looks like they will never change their fundametalist approach to conversion: Islam or the sword. Even the gates of Hades will not prevail against the cross, so Islam will always yield to the cross and the bible.

Karl 9/18/2006 2:35:42 PM
The reaction of some Muslim groups actually reinforces the Pope's comments on Islam. Burning effigies, violent protests etc. = 'tolerant ,peaceful Islam?'

Irritated 9/18/2006 2:36:04 PM
This is really becoming preposterous: every single time someone dares to utter a word that may possibly offend the Muslim religion, there?s havoc. Groups start burning flags, calling for Jihads and apologies ? what makes the Muslim religion so important that it may not be offended?! If someone offends you, don?t listen to them. Al-Qaeda is sounding more and more like the most self conscious group of people in the history of the world ? they declare Jihad on every single person, plant or animal that doesn?t like them! Jihad on the West, Jihad on Britain, Jihad on the Vatican. Sounds like someone needs a hug?!

Mike Millard 9/18/2006 2:36:32 PM
It is a pathetic state of affairs when the media pander to the demands of the militant muslims who spout fire and brimstone, "death to the infidels" and more yet whimper and moan when anyone, rightly, accuses them of being a source of violence and terrorism !! The world is getting as sick as those muslims who give the rest of the generally peace loving Muslim population of the world such a bad name. 9/11 was an unforgivable act that will NEVER be forgotten by Americans.

Pastor M Benya 9/18/2006 2:45:28 PM
This is the cutting edge where Islam must prove itself as to where they are agents of peace or of War. They can be either but not both.

A Solded Out Christian 9/18/2006 2:51:34 PM
I would like to express my sincere apology to my angry muslim brothers. I am a christian and my view about dealing with such situations is to look at the example Jesus set. He taught that Love is the greatest power. So in keeping with what my Lord and Saviour advocated and taught I choose to love, forgive and bless all muslims around the world just as Jesus Christ would. CHRIST IS LOVE and GOD of ALL

sam 9/18/2006 2:55:45 PM
Al-qaeda is an american creation......it does not take a genius to work out why they get so much publicity!!!!! As for the Pope the less i say, the better.........

Hannes 9/18/2006 2:55:47 PM
This is getting out of hand now. Ok, so what the pope said was maybe out of line, but he appologised for it. Why won't some Muslims accept that. I mean, if chritianity gets insulted, you don't see christian threatening to go to war against the person that insulted the faith. Accept the appology and forget about it.

Ainsley Daniels 9/18/2006 2:56:44 PM
People are once again judging the whole muslim community based on the reactions of a few people.I am no expert on islam, but what i do know that it is religion that teaches love, peace, sharing and tolerance. My theory on why we as christians do not complain as passionately as the muslim community when something get's said about our religion is that we are not as devout to our religion as our muslim brothers and sisters are about their religion. How of have muslim friends?

+++ 9/18/2006 2:57:35 PM
Smash the cross?coming from a religion of so called peace called Islam?!? I think not!! Once again, events around the world have shown that that calling Islam peaceful is far from the truth!!

jass 9/18/2006 3:04:43 PM
What the emperor Manuel II Palaeologus (1350-1425), quoted by our modern-day pope, asked his Muslim friend, "Show me what Mohammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman.""For instance," said the ancient emperor, "such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." THIS WHAT ISLAM IS ALL ABOUT---READ THE QURAAN !- NOTHING IS PEACEFULL ABOUT ISLAM-

Dean Swift 9/18/2006 3:05:44 PM
I find it amusing to see the various religions baiting each other so easily. I insult you, you go to war, kill a few of my people, I bomb your country! All backed up by their version of religion. Silly small minded people. Kids in school don't act this small minded. Luckily they'll grow up and run the world one day. Can't wait for that to happen, get rid of these silly "religious leaders" we have now. What a bunch of pillocks. There now I've insulted the whole lot.

Zulaiga 9/18/2006 3:07:18 PM
This reaction is NOT the way we are taught to deal with things as Muslims. The Pope apologised, we must accept it and move on. Jihad is not a word to be used lightly either, its meaning is more of "self defence" than of "attack after an apology is refused". With the commencement of Ramadaan, which teaches us to abstain, amongst other things, the feeling of anger, I am disappointed in the way some Muslims are reacting to this situation. The Pope has apologised...there's no need for a fight.

JASS 9/18/2006 3:11:55 PM
-Muslims are encouraged to be wholly occupied (Sura 2:273) with fighting for Allah's cause. - Allah will give "a far richer recompense to those who fight for him" (Sura 4:96). - Regarding infidels (unbelievers), they are the Muslim's "inveterate enemies" (Sura 4:101) - . Muslims are to "arrest them, besiege them and lie in ambush everywhere" (Sura 9:5) for them. They are to "seize them and put them to death wherever you find them, kill them wherever you find them, seek out the enemies of Islam relentlessly" (Sura 4:90). "Fight them until Islam reigns supreme" (Sura 2:193). "Cut off their heads, and cut off the tips of their fingers" (Sura 8:12). - If a Muslim does not go to war, Allah will kill him (Sura 9:39). He is to be told, "the heat of war is fierce, but more fierce is the heat of Hell-fire" (Sura 9:81). - A Muslim must "fight for the cause of Allah with the devotion due to him" (Sura 22:78) - Muslims must make war on the infidels (unbelievers) who live around them (Sura 9:123). - Muslims are to be "ruthless to unbelievers" (Sura 48:29). - A Muslim should "enjoy the good things" he has gained by fighting (Sura 8:69).

Zulaiga 9/18/2006 3:11:57 PM
I would also like to appeal to all the readers not to generalise and "Islamitise" the actions of a fraction of the Muslim population. Muslims are supposed to be peace loving...and while some aren't, please don't judge the entire religion and it's followers on that basis. There are similar incidents involving other religions, but such generalisations and words of hatred as I have seen in the feedback to this article, I have yet to see. Please show tolerance for those that are innocent.

paul 9/18/2006 3:13:32 PM
A load of hogwash. These okes should be dragged out onto the streets a whipped for their inability to tolerate others. I say down with islam and its bulling tactics.

Andre 9/18/2006 3:15:19 PM
We can see that the main world religions seem to promote love, peace and equality. Yet the fruit is often very different. All humankind are spiritually depraved, and this is evident in the behaviour of humankind.
