Ankara - Five strong explosions were reported in Istanbul on Thursday, television stations said, one near a bank and another near the British consulate.
An AFP reporter said part of the British Embassy had been destroyed.
"Part of a building next the front gate has completely collapsed. There is debris everywhere. Ambulances are arriving," he said.
A witness told CNN that windows of a school near the British Embassy were shattered by the blast.
Video footage showed scenes of chaos.
The blasts followed only five days after two suicide bombings at synagogues killed 25 people and injured more than 300.
