New York - A bomb scare on Friday at Penn Station - one of Manhattan's main transport hubs - frayed public nerves already on edge after the threat of a terrorist attack on the city's subway system.
Parts of the station were sealed off as law enforcement officials in biohazard suits were seen entering the area.
A police spokesperson said: "There was a report of a suspicious package. So far, we are treating this with a routine level of precaution."
The scare came a day after city officials warned of the most specific threat to date of an attack on what was one of the world's largest subway systems.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said: "This is the first time that we have had a threat with this level of specificity. It was more specific as to target, it was more specific as to timing."
There was a heavy police presence in subway stations on Friday morning, with random searches of bags and baby strollers, which had been cited as a possible method of concealing an explosive device.
