California bans gay marriages

Los Angeles - California voters approved a ban on gay marriages in California in a referendum only months after it was legalised, prompting thousands of same-sex couples to tie the knot, officials said on Wednesday.
The secretary of state said that with 95% of precincts reporting, the ban had been approved by 52.1% of voters, compared with 47.9% who voted against it.
