New York - The UN Security Council on Tuesday extended by one year an arms embargo against armed groups operating in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, diplomatic sources said.
The extention of the embargo - enacted in July 2003 and set to expire on Wednesday - was unanimously passed by the 15-member council, the sources said.
The embargo outlined in Resolution 1493 is "against all armed groups operating in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo".
The council is expected on Thursday to extend by two months the mandate of the UN mission, known as Monuc, in the embattled African country.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will issue a report next month on the situation in the DRC. In June, dissident soldiers took over the eastern city of Bukavu for one week despite the presence of UN forces there.
