'America, this is our moment'

Special Report

Obama could include Republicans

President-elect Barack Obama's incoming administration could include Republicans, or even some members of the current Cabinet, a top transition aide says.

St Paul, Minnesota - Barack Obama on Tuesday staked his claim to be the first black US presidential nominee in history and pledged to America "this is our time", as he urged Democrats to rally to his side.

"Tonight, I can stand before you and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for president of the United States," he told 19 000 delirious supporters packed into a victory rally at a stadium here.

"America, this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past," the Illinois senator vowed in a stirring speech, after securing the 2 118 delegates needed to clinch the party's nomination.

"Our time to bring new energy and new ideas to the challenges we face. Our time to offer a new direction for the country we love."

The crowd roared its approval, waving US flags and blue signs calling for "change we can believe in". A further 3 000 to 4 000 watched from outside.

'The road will be long'

"The journey will be difficult. The road will be long. I face this challenge with profound humility, and knowledge of my own limitations. But I also face it with limitless faith in the capacity of the American people," Obama said.

He vowed that despite the difficulties ahead: "I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless.

"This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth."

Praise for Hillary Clinton

At the end of the gruelling 17-month primary campaign, the longest and most expensive ever, Obama, 46, was effusive in his praise for his defeated rival, former first lady Hillary Clinton, saying she, too, had made history.

"She's a leader who inspires millions of Americans with her strength, her courage, and her commitment to the causes that brought us here tonight," he said.

Despite their bitter differences in past months, Obama paid tribute to Clinton's "unyielding desire to improve the lives of ordinary Americans, no matter how difficult the fight may be".

But he minced no words about his Republican adversary Senator McCain, who had earlier officially launched the general election campaign by dismissing the Democrat's clarion call of hope and change.

"It is not change when John McCain decided to stand with George Bush ninety-five percent of the time, as he did in the Senate last year," Obama said, in the same sports arena which will host the Republican convention in September.

"It's not change when he promises to continue a policy in Iraq that asks everything of our brave men and women in uniform and nothing of Iraqi politicians," Obama said in his point-by-point attack on the senator.

"John McCain has spent a lot of time talking about trips to Iraq in the last few weeks, but maybe if he spent some time taking trips to the cities and towns that have been hardest hit by this economy... he'd understand the kind of change that people are looking for."

The US elections have always been close. I can predict that enough Democrats will simply not see a way to vote for Obama and either abstain or vote for McCain - and that only has to be a small %.

settie 6/4/2008 7:37:13 AM
Long live Obama. The spirit of the previously unrecognised has spoken. This shows the maturity of the American people that it is not about race any more but suitability, capability.Good luck Obama but it is a good idea to incoorperate Hillary in the new campaign.

turbo_superboss 6/4/2008 7:51:12 AM
so what happens now

Aurius 6/4/2008 7:53:26 AM
This guy has lived out the dreams of Martin Luther King & Malcom X.I believe this is great news for America coz Barack is an intellectual.

NO TRUST 6/4/2008 8:05:45 AM
REMEMBER JFK , A UNPOPULAR WAR , AN INDUSTRIAL MILITARY COMPLEX WITH INTEREST IN WAR AND THE REPUBLICANS, A MESSAGE OF "HOPE" , REMEMBER WHAT THE US DO WITH SUCH A PRESIDENT???????

Mandla 6/4/2008 8:10:07 AM
Yeah it is about time America. The people have spoken and they say no to the killings in Iraq. 'This is the change we believe in'

Obama Mania 6/4/2008 8:12:47 AM
It is about time The U.S. recognizes the potential, ability and Intellect of it's black folk.Well done to Obama.Baruch

steven 6/4/2008 8:28:27 AM
I think Brack Obama will bring best changes in the white house and the world.Bravo Obama Bravo!!

Paul 6/4/2008 8:37:26 AM
All politicians are the same, whether they are black or white or coloured or asian. Its all about the money. I don't care for obama or mccain or mebkei or zuma. They are all money grabbers.

ntokozo sibanda 6/4/2008 8:42:00 AM
This is the greatest event which points to the achievement of black empowerment.yes obama, its our time.lets go it

Lisbon Jacobs 6/4/2008 8:42:36 AM
He will be the first black US president without a doubt. He is exactly what the US needs, change you can believe in...Watch this space.

Concerned 6/4/2008 8:44:06 AM
This is the time to party. Winds of change have finally reached America. This is a milestone in our history. What ever happens in November we can all be proud that it was a fair contest. Good luck to both Presidential nominees

Lenjo 6/4/2008 8:47:19 AM
Obama has showed the people of America that he can bring the sort of change needed by the people, and carter for the common man in the street. Have faith in him. He is going to deliver the goods and serve America's foreign policy especially in what concerns the war in Iraq. Congratulations for winning the Democratic nominations and to continue to win in November's general elections. Viva Obama viva

moipone 6/4/2008 8:51:57 AM
i have been following the campaign trail with keen interest and have been inspired by Mr Barack Obama. For a black man who has never been heard of until he put his name on the candidate list and make such an impact his speeches transcending all the colour barriers,i must say , well done and today i stand proud,he deserves it.

Mgezi 6/4/2008 8:53:21 AM
The first battles towards the US presidential election for the Democrats were won through grit and perserverence! Not only did Obama had to fight stereotypes within his party, but he had to prove that he is relevant. A tsunami will be sweeping through the US as the war nears in November. Now this is change we believe in - Mgezi

King 6/4/2008 8:54:52 AM
America still has it's right wing extremists. I see a lot of Hilary's people shifting their votes to John McCain. And in the remote chance that Obama is elected to US president, he might not hold that position for long. Bad as this sounds, i think there is a strong chance that a few people have begun polishing their high impact sniper rifles for this guy...God Bless America

TaurusaurusRex 6/4/2008 8:56:13 AM
In a lot of his campaign speeches, he played the racism card and even stooped to degrade his adoptive grandmother, but hey, if he can stand up for the US with neutrality and prove good on his word, go get 'em! :)

abdul 6/4/2008 8:57:09 AM
It is honorable to give chance to a next person to rule a country or accept defeat with a smile on your face unlike Mugabe being stupid not to step down in honour and dignity but prefer his people to suffer.Well done Obama and good luck.

DK 6/4/2008 8:59:15 AM
Settie, you are wrong. This does not show the maturity of the americans but rather their lack of intellect. They have once again fallen for a show put up by a big mouth bullsh!tter, and failed to see the true passion and experience Hillary has. Most americans appear to be superficial idiots.

Thuthuka 6/4/2008 9:16:07 AM
There is a season for every harvest. This is a season for change like never seen before, a time when ordinary American folk can say their pride and dignity have been restored, and that their children are back from a war that has left many parents childless, and many widowed. If Obama lives up to his promises, then I say this is a change Americans have long been waiting for, it´s not about race anymore, but about ideas that will transform an entire nation, and not just benefit a priviledged few.

Khaukanani 6/4/2008 9:28:15 AM
DK , I have no doubt you are white in colour, Settie is right , Americans they have shown maturity, you wanted Hillary to win, unfortunatelly People of America didn't thought the same, just because Obama is black, How pathetic, Dk we(Blacks0 still gonna rule you, whether you like it or not.

philani 6/4/2008 9:37:29 AM
this was a tremendous election campaing. well done Mr president obama(incoming)this gives hope to our african continent hope, come november and we all celebrate as you have said its our time!!pilastoz1kzn.

Tau 6/4/2008 9:46:52 AM
I congratulate Obama on his nomination, and wish him will as he starts to race Mcain. However, regardless of who becomes the next president, there is only so much he'll be able to do to change the status quo. The American bureacracy is a high wall to scale.

Truth 6/4/2008 9:49:55 AM
There was only one nominee (Republican) that stood for true hope and change in America, and the media blacked him out...even our media! Ron Paul could have saved the US and possibly the world. Read up on his policies, its amazing this guy hasnt received more airtime! He stands for TRUE CHANGE! Not empty rhetoric! But sadly, the US population, like the SA one, is totally clueless! Btw, JFK was the last great US leader, he wasnt a patsy of the industrial-military complexes, and this got him killed!

Truth 6/4/2008 9:52:35 AM
JFK tried to end the Federal Reserve System in the US, and thus prevent his country being thrown into further debt by the international bankers...this is one of the reasons he was killed! His successor immediately reversed his decision to end the Federal Reserve! We should follow his example and privatise our Reserve Bank, since our country is being controlled by international bankers! Look around you, the destruction is not by chance, but by choice!!!

mary 6/4/2008 9:58:19 AM
Imagine this, the president of the most powerful nation on earth, a black man. face it, the next top world leader, a black man. call me racist all you want, but white people your perceived supremacy is in the trash. your fellow American whities have matured after all.

Wayne 6/4/2008 10:01:06 AM
I am both African-American, conservative and I voted Republican for the last 19 years. After serving as a United States Marine, I know that General Colin Powell had every much as good a chance to become the first African American to become a canadate and was offered it by the Republicans in 1994. After much consideration and of course up to now was the most powerful African American in History, as commanding general of all US Military Forces, this man lead the way for Obama to succeed.

Christian 6/4/2008 10:01:36 AM
This is a time South Africians of all colours, creeds to unite and pray that America and it new president, no matter who, will recognise, that we need to acknowledge one who above us, that is Jesus. It does not matter whether U are in SA, America or Zimbabwe, You need to lead by Jesus, that the true root to Success, Hope, Peace and Happiness. God Bless. I am White and I do support Barack and wish him all the success.

Copstick 6/4/2008 10:09:07 AM
I heard B.O's speach on the radio and got the shivers. This guy sounds like a true leader, he has real passion. Blacks in the US are the minority and yet whites are voting for him , regardless of his skin colour , why are we then turning this into a black / white debate ? I hope he is elected as the leader of the free world - Mcain is a trigger happy imotionally unstable old man - Obama has the worlds best interest at heart but McCain only his own - Viva Obama - Drop the race issue - it's old !!!

Jan 6/4/2008 10:11:47 AM
As prophesy pointed out. The devil is busy to take over the world to rule it for a short time. Zimbabwe, South Africa and perhaps now also America. As Zume bravely put it ANC will rule until He returns.Who is right. The Book or not.

Thabs 6/4/2008 10:15:06 AM
why are you so against this man who has showed america that there is hope for them? the man who has rallied them behind him to have hope that this world leader [america] can be seen by the rest of the world as wanting to work on it's image that george and the republicans have worked hard to ruin in the name of self gain and old [and oh so evil] american kick ass values that the world has no place for? it kills you - righteous raanting racists - to see a black man being that hope. you're evil!

DK 6/4/2008 10:15:53 AM
Khaukanani, you seem to be a racist black person. read my previous comment again, without your racist blinded personality. Then think again about what I said. Hillary is a better candidate than Obama. It's got nothing to do with colour, just experience, passion for what she believes in, and true mature intellegence. See also the comment by "Truth". Lastly, I laugh in the face of your ignorrance and emotional immaturity.

Mpho 6/4/2008 10:18:08 AM
Just a pity, that we don't have a strong political party to take the ANC on; it's just great for any democracy. We need a Barack Obama in South Africa. I hope the DA and other parties have learnt something from the americans & I hope they are preparing for next year's election. The way I see it, the majority of the "iliterate" will vote the ANC back into power. They will be "bussed" in again; the usual promises about houses, grants, ect will be made again. Helen Zille, here is a challenge for you !

Mai Munya 6/4/2008 10:22:23 AM
Hope Obama will be able to tackle Mugabe and show him that its not a white versus black issue as Mugabe believes that Blair, Brown and Bush are against his cruelty and misrule because he is black. After all its fellow black people that are suffering because of your cruelty Mugabe.

Steminibos 6/4/2008 10:23:21 AM
Congratulations to Hussein Barack Obama, son from African soil, may he be a good leader, cause we all know that a lot will dependend on his judgement, and his track record does not speak well thereoff!

rufaro 6/4/2008 10:32:52 AM
VIVA OBOMA...U GOT MY VOTE

xoliswa 6/4/2008 10:33:25 AM
i'm not trying to be negative bt the white house will always be the white house bt i wish obama all the luck in the world he went this i hope he becomes president.

DK 6/4/2008 10:43:08 AM
Thabs... another idiotic remark by a black racist.... Please see my comment to Khaukanani, it applies to you as well. Mpho, you speak the truth. Let's hope the people of SA will see beyond colour and start to vote with their minds in future. Obama will be a lot better for USA than Bush. Hillary even better, let's hope Obama asks her to be his Vice President. Now that will be a dream team...

john 6/4/2008 10:48:39 AM
Yes Khaukanani, unfortunately we've seen across the continent how well you do it!

Annelise 6/4/2008 10:50:51 AM
It's cause this country has a racist problem that some people only see which colour rules this country..it isn't about colour any more..it hasn't been for a long time.there is no more previously disatvantage people..we now have to look to the strongest leader and know that no bullsh!t will get in his way to make life better for all..Since the the new goverment has come to rule..what good has come of it..I agree that the fighting spirit is what we need and not another promise maker.

H. Simphiwe Mngoma 6/4/2008 11:18:06 AM
Long live Obama. He is the truest symbol of rational leadership; which is what the entire world is in desparate need of.

paul 6/4/2008 11:26:41 AM
White people voted for him because he was the best candidate, black people in south africa support him just because he's black. Its not americans who are idiots, its south africans who are obsessed with colour. Look at all the black people who commented here that identify with him as a black man and not a candidate. People everywhere around the world identify with different things. Black people identify themselves with their skin colour before anything else. We need more ppl like Mpho in SA!

scorpion 6/4/2008 11:49:31 AM
I hope Helen Zille has learnt a thing or two out of Barack's presidency campaign because if she can put such effort she will win majority of so called black votes as she is colour blind. This campaign has taught me a lot.

GWW 6/4/2008 11:51:41 AM
Get off your little tribal/chief high horse, "to Rule" implies I will accept and do what ever you say- HaHa Not likely. Im quite sure that you can even mention one thing that B.O is standing for but gave support for him becuase he's black. My bra you have an highly inflated view of yourself and your colour, get on with your little life, achieve something and stop trying to stir the racial pot. Im rooting for obama...

vuyo 6/4/2008 11:54:43 AM
Look closely at all the positions which were known to belong to the white communities around the world i.e Tennis, Golf, F1, 2010, White house etc...see the trend, or are just another stupid farm boy.

Who are you voting for? 6/4/2008 1:13:00 PM
we focus too much on colour, the point is who will do the best job at looking after your country, will you vote for someone simply because of the fact that they are a paticular race you like or against someone because they are not, how superficial! We need people with empathy and passion running countries, people whome are humane not power hungry and selfish, is the person you vote for a person whome would care about the well being of his or her people, of the country itself?

Setsi 6/4/2008 1:26:00 PM
I am an African. I am getting increasingly disturb by follow Africans who now wants to brag about Obama being Black. Obama is above this thing of blackness, please seize the moment and stop this racisim its sickning!!! Obama is voted by whites as well, because all agree his is the better canditate not because he is black!

Gibson 6/4/2008 1:44:15 PM
paul you talking more like obama race has nothing to do with intellect.only mentally racial sick indindualls witl concider it important.Obama is aman who will inspire you from the first moment you listen to his speeches.he requires the support from all peace loving people world worid wide.its too much of people dying in the middle east inocent ones for that matter.mr mcain wants to bring more misery to this world in the name of strengthening america.but what is he going to do for his great people and the world at large

Takura Chamuka 6/4/2008 3:23:49 PM
I have been extremely inspired by Mr Obama as I made a follow up of the campaign. Apparently this guy appears to me, to be a treasure for America. I have come to realised that his statements are more than just political but are filled with substance. In him I have seen a unique politician, one who really has passion and vision for his country. It seems destiny has it that Obama will be the next President. Go Obama go. Africa is proud of you!
