Brits - A North West policeman died at the Brits Hospital on Sunday morning after two gunmen opened fire on him on Saturday night, provincial police said on Sunday.
The policeman was shot at Mothutlong, near Brits in North West, on Saturday night, said Inspector Gabashane Moseki.
Moseki said the policeman was shot in the stomach. His name
could not be released until the next-of-kin were informed.
The local police's serious crime unit has launched a manhunt for two men who also fled with the victim's service pistol.
Moseki said the incident occurred around 20:00 on Saturday. The two gunmen approached the policeman, who was accompanied by his daughter, and started shooting at him.
The men then attempted to flee in the victim's private vehicle
but failed because they could not operate the immobiliser.
The daughter escaped unharmed.
The two gunmen disappeared into nearby bushes.
The incident followed the death of two policemen who were shot
dead in Mabopane, north of Pretoria, two weeks ago.
