Cape Town - Two women - Petro de Villiers, 20, of Centurion and Thelma Jansen, 19, of George - were the first two Idols contestants to reach the top 10 in this reality TV show on M-Net on Monday night.
Another popular contestant, Noluthando Meje, 16, of Gardens in Cape Town, dropped out after receiving the third most votes from viewers.
De Villiers' name came as a surprise to the four judges, who all thought Meje would make the grade. Only Randall Abrahams and Gareth Cliff thought Jansen sang well enough to deserve a place in the top 10.
The six who dropped out had to be comforted at the end of the show by presenter Colin Moss.
But it's not all over yet for Meje and the others who dropped out.
The judges will soon select a fifth group of contestants out of the top 32 who fell out, and on August 17 they'll get a chance to sing for a top 10 slot.
