Mo hands over spy files

Bloemfontein - Mo Shaik told the Hefer Commission on Monday that he has handed his database of suspected apartheid spies to National Intelligence.
Shaik says the database was handed to a legal adviser of the minister of national intelligence, with a deputy director of the secret service as witness, the SABC reports.
Last week, Shaik told the commission that he still had the database in his possession. He said it included the names of 888 people who were investigated by the ANC as possible spies for the apartheid government. This was done as part of Project Bible, which was aimed at combating government infiltration of the then liberation movement.
Shaik said on Thursday that he regarded the information on the database as belonging to the ANC. Only when they instructed him to hand it over, would he do so.
Shaik, wound up his evidence on Moday with a repeated attack on the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). He reiterated his belief that there is abuse of power within the NPA. Shaik believes some people in the office are following their own agendas.
The commission is investigating whether Bulelani Ngcuka, the National Director of Public Prosecutions, abused his power as well as allegations that he was an apartheid spy.
Before concluding his testimony, Shaik thanked President Thabo Mbeki for setting up the commission. -Sapa
