Kampala - The Ugandan army on Monday said it had killed 30 rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army who tried to enter the country from southern Sudan at the weekend.
Army spokesperson Major Shaban Bantariza said by telephone that the 30 LRA fighters were killed in a fire fight on Sunday at Agoro in the northern Kitgum district.
The LRA has intensified attacks in northern Uganda during the
past month, killing dozens of civilians and soldiers.
The rebels has for the past decade been engaged in a violent
campaign to topple the government of President Yoweri Museveni,
with the declared aim of replacing it with an administration based on the Biblical Ten Commandments.
However, the movement is notorious for brutal killings, the
maiming of civilians and the abduction of children.
One rebel fighter surrendered during Sunday's fighting,
Bantariza added.
An assortment of weapons, including machine guns,
rocket-propelled grenades and other explosives were recovered from the insurgents.
Several government soldiers were wounded during the fighting,
according to Bantariza. - Sapa-AFP
