Bangladesh remain upbeat

2006-04-12 07:28

Dhaka - Bangladeshis remained in upbeat mood despite a strong Australian fightback on the fourth day of the fluctuating first Test on Wednesday.

The hosts lost their last five second-innings wickets for just 20 runs to leave the world champions needing 307 for victory, but Bangladesh fans were still optimistic about their chances of recording only their second victory in 43 Tests.

"We think Bangladesh are going to win, only bad luck can force them to a draw against Australia," cricket fan Ahmad Zulkarnain said.

Millions of Bangladeshi fans gathered round television sets at home and in public places to watch their team, who scored 427 in their first innings before bowling out the Australians for 269.

"Watching good cricket between world champions and an emerging cricket force is not less important than attending classes," student H.M. Humayun said.

Taxi stands were short of vehicles as drivers took a day off to rush to the Fatullah stadium.

"Who cares about a few takas?" said one driver. "I better rush to the field and see our boys play."

Cricket is hugely popular in Bangladesh across all social classes.

"I will have eternal peace in my mind if Bangladesh can win this Test against a powerful team," rickshaw puller Jan Mohammad said.

"The days of defeat may have ended and now the time has come to win. I am confident the team will continue to do better in international cricket," said Humayun Faridi, a popular TV star.

Bangladesh have won only one of their 42 Test matches since 2000, that victory coming over a depleted Zimbabwe side.

The Bangladeshis lost their two previous Tests against Australia in 2003 by an innings.
