Knives out for Arendse again

2008-09-10 22:55

Johannesburg - Norman Arendse once again faces the possibility of losing his position as South Africa's cricket boss. Word has it that he could be ousted as president of Cricket South Africa (CSA) at a meeting here on September 26.

The man favoured to take over the hot seat from Arendse is Gauteng cricket boss Mtutuzeli Nyoka.

He will apparently be in partnership with Arendse's predecessor at CSA, Ray Mali.

Since CSA has been transformed from a professional company into a Section 21 non-profit organisation, nominations have had to be called for again for all the relevant office-bearers.

Mali, who took over as president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) when Percy Sonn passed away, confirmed from the Eastern Cape on Wednesday that he has been approached to be part of a partnership involving Nyoka.

"I am always prepared to assist South African cricket. I don't want to play a leading role again, but have offered to act in an advisory capacity," Mali said. He also confirmed that most of the unions support the alliance between him and Nyoka.

A strong feeling exists in local cricket that Arendse may have reached the end of the road in view of Mali's support for Nyoka's nomination.

It is apparently just the impetus needed to bring about the change.
