Pietermaritzburg - Having just passed the two hour mark of the Comrades Marathon, which got under way at Durban City Hall at 05:30 on Sunday, the big concern for the Russian girls is that race favourite Elena Nurgalieva fell some time earlier in the race and is starting to struggle with her knee which is bleeding. She is expected to stop for medical attention shortly.
Twin sister Olesya is leading the women's race so far with Elena close behind. The two South African hopefuls Farwa Mentoor and Riana van Niekerk are in fifth and sixth place respectively.
Leading the men's race is Prodigal Khumalo from KwaZulu-Natal followed by fellow South African, Charles Tjiane (Central Gauteng). Russian Leonid Shvetsov, who kept a low profile before the race, has moved up into third place.
The race is being run at a very fast pace and it is possible Shvetsov will break more records this year.
