Johannesburg - Team Barloworld have announced an 11 cyclist strong squad for the Giro d'Italia, their first grand tour of the season and one of the most prominent races amongst the cycling fraternity.
The high calibre cyclist's which make up the squad of nine starters and two
reserves, from which the starting line up will be selected, are:
* Mauricio Soler (2007 Tour de France King of the Mountain's
winner) - COL
* Robert Hunter (Winner 2007 and 2008 Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle
Tour, 2007 Tour de France stage 11 winner) - RSA
* Christian Pfannberger (Winner 2008 Giro del Capo) - AUT
* Enrico Gasparotto (Winner stage 1 at the 2008 Driedaagse de
Panne-Koksijde) - ITA
* Patrick Calcagni (Winner of the 2008 GP Pino Cerami) - SUI
* Felix Cardenas - COL
* Stephen Cummings (Winner of stage 2 at the 2008 Giro della
Provincia de Reggio Calabria) - GBR
* Geraint Thomas (Gold medal winner of the Pursuit Race at the
2008 Track World Championships) - GBR
* Carlo Scognamiglio - ITA
* John Lee Augustyn - RSA
* Francesco Bellotti - ITA
Claudio Corti, Team Barloworld team manager comments, "It is an honour
for us to be cycling in such a prestigious race. Our cyclists are in
good condition and are all focused on performing well as a team at the
Giro."
In preparation for the race, the team will be training in northern Italy
for the opening stage time trial of the Giro, in Palermo on the May 10t
as well as completing a series of training rides of the key stages
of the Giro, including the Marmolada, Plan de Coronas, Passo del Vivone
and Monte Pora.
