Komphela 'reckless, arrogant'

2008-07-28 13:26

Dear Editor,

SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) president Moss Mashishi's statement on accountability to parliament is "reckless" and "arrogant", according to the ANC.

Once again we see the ANC defending it's actions irrespective of whether they are blatant racism or not.

It's not like this is the first time Komphela has made racist remarks. If anyone is "reckless" and "arrogant" it is Komphela, yet the ANC jump to his defence? I wonder what this tells us?

As for Komphela's rantings and ravings about quotas - for goodness sake man, do you really think any coach is going to overlook any player who deserves a place in a team? But that should apply whether they are black or white.

I also wonder why, when "calculating" representation the likes of Komphela take the entire population into account and not just for example, the rugby playing population when deciding on "quotas" for the Springbok team?

Please ANC, you have a huge responsibility to make this into a great country. By wasting time and effort on issues that will logically sort themselves out with time (as more and more excellent black sportsmen and women come to the fore) you are taking your eye off the critical things like crime and yes, racial harmony!

Nick,
Randburg

Kolobe 7/28/2008 1:43:17 PM
Butana Kompela is spot on, the white and Indian bigots that resist change in sports should be told without shame that they are bringing the country into disrepute, their bias and racist selection policies should be condemned with shame and compept, transformation will take place whether the bigots like it or not.

chops 7/28/2008 1:46:34 PM
It's pure logic that the composition of a team will more or less represent the composition of people actively playing the game. If more white people than black people play rugby, then the team will consist of more white players. Simple as that. Does the crowds at these games represent the demographics of the country? I wonder why not. And why is Komphela not making a fuss about that as well?

bonjo 7/28/2008 1:48:06 PM
Nick, it is very unfortunate that we have people like Moses Mashishi in strategic positions who however, do not understand their mandate. Moses as the president should be the first one to come out strong on issues of transformation, the last thing we need is a black face with a white body, transformation need to be addressed at all levels of our sporting codes in SA, i don't expect you to understand this concept, soemtimes its not about talent, but the choice of the selectors who are white in mot

Boer 7/28/2008 1:48:32 PM
Well spoken, but what is blatantly obvious to some, are incomprehinsable to others. As long as you have leftist members of society in power, you will have ridiculously outragous policies to compensate for the wrongs of the past too quickly. Don't even waste your breath on saying it. Some ANC policies worked well and are well thought through, like most of our fine and robust fiscal policies, others are just plain stupid and dumb, like quotas.

Filemon 7/28/2008 1:55:57 PM
Komphela, Malema and Vavi are 3 peas in a pod, making a noise just to get attention. When justifying proportional representaion of teams, the demographics of players per sport counters the normal Bafana quota arguments. Make non swimmers swim for racial reasons and they will drown

Winny 7/28/2008 1:55:59 PM
Komphela may be reckless, but the truth is yes, black people desrving to be in teams whether is at school or at big clubs are left out not because they are incompetend but because of the fact that some white coach want to make a point, tell me if we dont have people like Khompela will we ever see blacks in our teams? i guess never"" Sometimes you need to make a noise to be heard especially when you are black, your talent comes after just be realistic, and stop acting like you can be fair.

Charl 7/28/2008 1:56:37 PM
I feel sorry for Komphela because he, like many of his racist comrades, have an inbred fear and inferiority complex towards white people. This fear clouds their logic and leads to absurd actions and reactions. Any black person who fears being ruled by a white person loses sight of the fact that Apratheid is over and people have to be accountable for their actions. By pre judging any person on grounds of skin colour denies you the opportunity to see the triumph of excellence over mediocrity.

Cassius 7/28/2008 1:57:31 PM
Komphela's racism remarks has shooked me! He is my fellow black brother but that should not give him liberty to command social issues like he did. He gas actually embarrassed me, we are working on social cohesion not divisional remarks according to colour; if he need us blacks to take part in the sport administration he must not narrow hi mind; let the sport committee run public strategy like they did with BEE and call upon "Black" to take part I think that will be democratic

Birdman 7/28/2008 1:57:31 PM
It is far easier to pick on soft issues such as quotas, anti-smoking, traffic fines and create a lot of noise while the major issues slide. The poor man needs to look as if he is of use to the community and quotas are a sure way to impress the ignorant.

mp3's mentor 7/28/2008 2:02:44 PM
the only responsibility they seem to have is that of disempoyering the white population no matter what the cost. The argument that sports teams should represent the demographics of the country is the biggest load of crap i've ever heard.talent isnt handed out in equal amounts to various races.they only say that to justify placement of non-performing blacks in place of talented whites.they're justifying their racism but i doubt we'll hear any complaints from the masses cause it doesnt affect them.

The Truth 7/28/2008 2:09:23 PM
One wonders how exactly characters like Komphela & his parrot deputy,Cedric Frolick, manage to get themselves placed in such positions of huge responsibility.I recall when this mampara wanted to remove the Boks passports prior to the World Cup last year,as well as many other instances where he has shot his mouth off.Well done to Moss Mashishi and SASCOC for finally standing up to him,VASBYT!

jannie 7/28/2008 2:12:54 PM
Read mp3's mentors comment and get it into your head: "talent isnt handed out in equal amounts to various races" Look in the USA...their 100m sprinters are BLACK. White people cant run that fast! Stop trying to force black people into every sport because you think they should be there! Whites will never compete in the long distance (5000m+), we do not complain about it. Time to use your brain for a change.

Peter 7/28/2008 2:15:00 PM
One bit of advice before having a rant: check your spelling. I think the word you were looking for was contempt not compept. Idiot!

KLZ 7/28/2008 2:29:03 PM
.......the misrepresentivity of races across sport codes in SA is largely because of apartheid, that needs to be corrected just like everything else which resulted from apartheid policies. Do not be in denial people!!! Again, I hope we can get to a point where we look past the race and promote fairness for all South Africans.

Thabo Z 7/28/2008 2:29:16 PM
I think Kilobe is right. What we should do is make sure all sports have 100% only black players including soccer. No other race should be allowed to participate, and then for Kolobe and Komphela hope we win everything. Well lets see if we take the 2010 World Cup Kolobe. Hopefully your only blacks team beats England , Germany ,Italy.

The Truth 7/28/2008 2:40:49 PM
It is ALL about talent and merit.Exactly how many sports facilities have Komphela and co. built in the townships to develop the young black talent during the last 14 years (which we all know is out there)? You cannot build a @#$% house from the roof down?! How is your logic? Oh wait, sorry, neither of you have any logic. My apologies for assuming that you do.

Point Blank 7/28/2008 2:46:18 PM
Is there. In the last few weeks we have seen "prominent" black people launching racist attacks, theats of violence, accussing the few whites that are left in this country of policies long proven not to work (only they in reverse now). Give them a little power and they think they can take over the world and pull the fleece over our eyes. Power hungry noise makers.

Confucious 7/28/2008 2:52:52 PM
Shame on you News24 - the articles that you are posting are getting extremely boring because the same old topics are covered or they lead to exactly the same old responses - ANC, DA, racism, black and white, blah, blah, blah.... Look at the poor and few responses thereto. Don't underestimate our intelligence - any fool can clearly see that Kolobe and his gang's comments come from people at News24 - they are posted just to stir arguments and get responses. Wake up and stop this rubbish!!!!!

DavidD 7/28/2008 3:01:25 PM
Khompela is just trying to make a name for himself. The poor guy was crippled with polio, I think, as a child and lives in the shadow of his brother, an ex Bafana Bafana player and current U23 coach. I heartily disagree with a lot of what he's said but he's motivated more than just by politics. The problem is, there's far too much personal resentment for the job he's got.

Wiseman 7/28/2008 3:05:49 PM
KLZ, you are right. I believe all reasonable people agree with you. The only debate is "how" do we right the effects of all those wrongs of the past. Do we do this by ensuring that all teams (and businesses) have to represent the demographics of the country. To me, that is going way beyond righting the wrongs of the past and in no way promotes fairness to all.

Bokamoso 7/28/2008 3:08:57 PM
A thing about change is that it going to come, and when it comes you either embrace it or not, my noble way of reasoning is that transformation is here, you either accept it or not, it is in your face. As for MP3's mentor, how on earth did you come to a conclusion that races are not equally talented. If you give a kid an opportunity to play Golf at a young age or give a person a chance and support irrespective of race, they will shine; let me draw your attention to two great golf players. Gary player and Tiger woods, these golfers are talented, not because they are white or black, but they were give a chance, they were mentored and supported. Thinking before posting will do you good. Transformation in all sport should be now in full swing. We are all equal no matter what and no one is more talented than me.

rich 7/28/2008 3:12:40 PM
As a sport playing person I have no problem with racial quotas, but as long as the demographics of the country are represented across all sports codes... So bring on the two white guys in bafana bafana and stop making racist comments Mr Khompela, there are better ways of getting what you want. You don't have to stoop so low as to appear to be a black apartheid agent.

jannie 7/28/2008 3:14:43 PM
It was scientifically proven by a US university that genetics/race has got a lot to do with sport performance!! You may be talented, but your brain needs practice boet.

James 7/28/2008 3:15:51 PM
Kolobe, you never cease to amaze. You now whine about demographic representation in sports teams, because you seem hell bent on allowing mediocrity to flourish. How would you feel playing for a side knowing that there are other players that are far better than you? It must be a great feeling to walk off a field having lost a match knowing that you could have been fairly instrumental that loss. Would you like to be that player? Maybe there should be representation in Bafana Bafana??

wb 7/28/2008 3:15:55 PM
Yes you right, give all people a chance to shine from a early age and they will automatically be placed in positions they deserve, so do you want to take white people that deserve to be there and replace them with people that are balck just because they are black. White people generally have no problem with transformation whatsoever if it is right that it is for the better of the team. Imagine Gary Player was replaced with abalck player lessor then him and never became the legend he is today?

KoosS 7/28/2008 3:18:29 PM
I vote for quotas - quotas at every match practice. Teams are chosen, based on the number of people that actually come to practice, and put the effort in to prepare.....

jannie 7/28/2008 3:19:37 PM
"If you give a kid an opportunity to play Golf at a young age or give a person a chance and support irrespective of race, they will shine" Exactly, from a young age. Start building young black sportsmen from the bottom and help them grow into great sportsmen.

Tandi D 7/28/2008 3:19:56 PM
Kolobe you are a racist, you do not belong on this discussion forum and you remind of the power hungry ANC fat cats who think that blacks own the world. Why do you not place a photo of yourself when you write a letter to the editor so that we can see how and idiot looks like

tim 7/28/2008 3:20:35 PM
So what are you actually saying? When would you consider things 'transformed'? When there are no more whites in sports teams, and everything is black? Please, dont disguise your racism and evil as 'transformation'. Dont worry, son, you will reap what you sow, and you will once again beg at the white mans door when you have broken everything you stole from him to begin with.

Cape Town Kid 7/28/2008 3:20:41 PM
what is reckless and arrogant is to agree with "coconuts' like mashishi. We need more people like Khompela, who is prepared to call a spade a spade and then come up with a plan of action. That guys..is what we call transformative leadership.geddit..transform --leader ---transform--!

TB 7/28/2008 3:24:03 PM
Nothing in this country ever was equal - ever. International stars in this place are the kids of rich folks that can afford to sponsor them until they are famous and some or other corporate will sponsor them. Fact of life. Rich people are more equal than others.Black & white, until the Government get off their fat arses and implement and fund national sport development - like in Australia. But on the other hand, they cannot even feed the poor, and we cannot eat stadiums and swimming pools can we?

Glenn 7/28/2008 3:25:21 PM
I hear you brother but tell me, how do you transform the top when the bottom has never been developed?

LSG 7/28/2008 3:28:46 PM
In introducing the new cariculum DoE started first at the Primary level untill full implemetation at Secondary Schools. It is true we need transformation, however it has to start from the roots upwards. You cannot force transformation into our senior teams(Rugby & Cricket) which are performing so well. I need transformation but not at the expence of our beautiful nation.Provide proper facilities at the townships, set a target and see if we cannot meet transformation target in a particular year.

Tuffy 7/28/2008 3:29:22 PM
That explains it DavidD - crippled by polio. Where did it hit him hardest - between the ears? And to Bokamoso - you say people must "get used to it"? Here's another idea - why don't all PD South Africans petition the government to scrap all forms of quota and then all PD South Africans compete on merit only? If you have the cojones, of course. Or do you want to be known to the rest of the world forever as a peoples who require special legal protection to survive in a competitive environment?
