Rome - Italy's rugby federation will reportedly appoint a successor to coach Pierre Berbizier before the Rugby World Cup, with former South Africa coach Nick Mallett or former France captain Philippe Saint-Andre expected to fill the role.
Berbizier, who led the Azzurri to an unprecedented two victories in the Six Nations this year, said in April he did not want to renew his contract after the September 7 to October 20 tournament in his native France.
"We will have a new coach before the beginning of the World Cup," federation president Giancarlo Dondi told Tuesday's edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.
Mallett reportedly said on Monday he was "seriously considering" the job.
"He is among the people that we have consulted," Dondi told Gazzetta. "Negotiations are in progress, but he has yet to give us a response. We are also in talks with Saint-Andre."
Mallett, who led the Springboks to 27 victories in 38 Tests from 1997-2000, has a reputation for developing weaker teams.
Saint-Andre is the Sale Sharks director of rugby, guiding the club to the premiership title in 2006. He has also coached Bourgoin and Gloucester.
Should either succeed Berbizier, they will be the fourth foreign coach to lead the Azzurri in nine years. Former All Blacks John Kirwan (2002-05) and Brad Johnstone (1999-2002) have also led the team.
