England humiliate Proteas

2008-08-26 19:04

Nottingham - Stuart Broad took a career-best five wickets on Tuesday to lead England to a resounding 10-wicket win over South Africa in the second one-day international at Trent Bridge.

The tourists crumbled to 83 all out, their second lowest one-day total, as Broad's pace and control brought him 5-23 at his home ground.

England openers Ian Bell and Matt Prior, who had earlier taken six catches behind the stumps, then knocked off the winning runs in just 14.1 overs to give England a 2-0 series lead with three matches to play.

But it was Broad's performance that dominated the day, although his figures could have been even better until Andre Nel hit three boundaries off his 10th and final over.

Even so, Broad's bowling performance was the fifth best ever by an Englishman in one-day internationals.

Nel was South Africa's leading scorer with a quick-fire 13 from seven balls after coming in at No 9, showing how close South Africa came to falling short of their lowest ever one-day total. That was the 69 it managed against Australia in 1993.

Prior took four of his six catches off Broad's bowling, while Andrew Flintoff continued his return to bowling form with 3-29. Steve Harmison bowled just one over, but still took two wickets for just four runs.

Dramatic one-handed catch

South Africa won the toss and chose to bat. They made a solid start until Broad had Herschelle Gibbs caught behind for 10 to make it 16-1 in the fourth over. Captain Graeme Smith went the same way two overs later as Prior dived across Owais Shah at first slip to take a dramatic one-handed catch.

Shah did get a catch when Jacques Kallis fell to Broad for 6, but JP Duminy then fell to the Broad-Prior combination to make it 36-4.

AB de Villiers went leg-before-wicket to Flintoff, who then had Mark Boucher caught behind by Prior for 10 off 33 balls _ making him the only other batsman to reach double figures.

Broad got rid of Johan Botha for 1 run off 16 balls to go to 5-11 off 9.2 overs, before Nel slightly tarnished the paceman's figures.

The relief lasted hardly any time, though, and Nel was out to Harmison's first ball to make it 68-8. A four from Albie Morkel took South Africa past their previous lowest mark before the allrounder - the only change to the South Africa side that lost last week's opening match by 20 runs - was caught by Prior off Harmison for 6.

Flintoff then wrapped things up at the end of the following over, the 23rd, when he clean bowled Dale Steyn.

Prior then sped the England innings along with 45 off just 36 balls, finishing off the match with his sixth four - taking England to 85-0.
