Johannesburg - Wits coach Roger De Sa is happy with the way his side played and beat Santos 2-0 in the opening fixture of the Absa Premiership at Bidvest Stadium.
"I think we played well and could have scored more," he said. "But overall I am very happy."
Wits striker Phikolethu Spelman headed the home team in to the lead and former Santos playmaker Marawaan Bantam doubled the score all before the halftime break. Santos striker Eleazor Rodgers missed from the spot and so did his partner Irwin Isaacs. De Sa was not happy with the penalties they conceded.
"I think the guys wasted a few chances but they're a young side and will learn from this. I am also not happy with the way we conceded two penalties.
We will work on it and improve on this," De Sa noted.
His counterpart at Santos admitted that his team were jaded and also blamed the travel arrangements for their dismal performance.
"I can't blame a specific player. They were all not focused in the first half but in the second half they played better I think," the former Botswana army general said.
"I also don't like the travel arrangements. We landed this afternoon, had a snack and then a rest," he said. "This is obviously not good for us. Next time we have to be in the place (where we play) at least a day before the time."
Wits debutant midfielder Clifford Mulenga who won man-of-the-match said better things are still to come.
"I am not 100% happy with my performance. I definitely think I can and will improve," the former Tuks midfielder said.
"I've been here for two months now and am really enjoying it. It was easy to get to know the guys and although it took some time to get used to Roger's methods, I can say that I understand what he wants from us," the Zambian told reporters.
