SA to spend R5bn on 2010

Cape Town - South will spend up to
R5bn ($810m) on infrastructure for the 2010
soccer World Cup, the National Treasury said on Wednesday.
Presenting the government's 2006 budget, Finance Minister
Trevor Manuel said about R3bn of this would be set
aside over the next three fiscal years.
"Details of project allocations have not yet been allocated,
but we will spend up to R5bn in dedicated
infrastructure for the World Cup," Manuel said.
South Africa has secured the rights to host the 2010 soccer
showpiece and plans to use a maximum of 10 stadiums - five of
which will be constructed, with the remainder being refurbished.
"I understand that both the national football side and the
cricket team have volunteered to do unpaid clearing of building
rubble. There are no joys without nightmares that precede them,"
said Manuel, jokingly.
