Sydney - Australia's richest football club is hoping to sign former Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler, officials said on Friday.
Fowler arrived in Sydney on Thursday and is expected to leave on Monday after inspecting Sydney FC facilities and talking to the league-leading club's management.
Fowler, revered as "God" by Liverpool supporters, became a free agent after being released at the end of the English Premiership season.
Sydney FC are competing against British clubs Leicester, Cardiff and Port Vale for the services of the 32-year-old.
Sydney have been keen to sign a leading international player since losing former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke to British club Sunderland.
Yorke helped Sydney to the inaugural A-League premiership in 2006.
The club signed former Socceroos defender Tony Popovic on a two-year deal on Wednesday.
