Thorn out of Dunedin Test

2008-07-06 11:20

Wellington - New Zealand lock Brad Thorn has been handed a one-week ban for unsportsmanlike behaviour and will miss next weekend's Tri-Nations match against South Africa in Dunedin.

Thorn was cited after the All Blacks' 19-8 victory over the world champions in Wellington on Saturday, in which the 33-year-old picked up Springboks hooker John Smit in the sixth minute and dumped him on his back after a ruck.

The incident prompted a melee between both sets of forwards and Smit said after the game the tackle had caused a groin injury that grew progressively worse throughout the first half and forced the Springboks skipper off just before the interval.

Thorn was cited by commissioner Tim Harland and admitted at a hearing in front of Dennis Wheelahan on Sunday the lifting and dropping of Smit constituted an act of foul play, the New Zealand Rugby Union said in a statement.

"Mr Wheelahan said the conduct was an act contrary to good sportsmanship rather than a dangerous tackle," the statement said.

"After taking all matters into account, including Thorn's previously excellent record as well as the sanction guidelines prescribed in the IRB Regulations, Mr Wheelahan imposed a suspension of one week."

Thorn was one of the All Blacks standout players in Saturday's bruising encounter and his absence at Carisbrook creates a headache for coach Graham Henry with a lack of depth in the position.

Rookie lock Anthony Boric is likely to be promoted to the starting line-up to partner Ali Williams.

Chiefs lock Kevin O'Neill was already brought into the squad as cover for Williams, who injured his ankle against England last month.

Recent All Blacks Jason Eaton and Ross Filipo, who are on duty with New Zealand Maori in the Pacific Nations Cup, could also be brought into the squad for the second match of the tournament.
